San Francisco Overview

San Francisco sits at the end of a peninsula and is surrounded by water on 3 sides. To the west is the Pacific Ocean, to the east the Bay and to the north the Golden Gate. The city itself is small and compact, measuring only 7 miles by 7 miles.

The population of San Francisco is about 776,000. Residents often refer to it as simply —“the City.” The Bay Area is home to over 6 million people and is the fourth largest metropolitan center in the nation. The Greater San Francisco Bay Area includes:

  • EAST BAY
    • Alameda County
    • Contra Costa County
  • PENINSULA/SOUTH BAY
    • San Mateo County
    • Santa Clara County
  • NORTH BAY
    • Marin County
    • Napa County
    • Sonoma County
    • Solano County

While the weather is moderate (40ºF to 70ºF), Mark Twain supposedly said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” San Francisco is known for its microclimates. In summer, fog often hugs the coast and pours through the Golden Gate bringing cool and foggy weather: the closer you are to the Pacific Ocean the cooler and wetter the weather. Further away from the “city” proper, the weather gets warmer. September and October are our warmest months.
